Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas friends! We hope you had a great day filled with food and friends and family.

I'm sure your Facebook feed has been full of kids opening presents and, shocker, that's what you'll see here too. Why? Cause it's gosh darn cute!

This was the first time Tiny has opened a present and she wasn't quite sure how to feel about it. I understand her confusion because normally I tell her not to rip paper or grab the pretty bows.

Don't worry. She got the hang of it even though it's true what they say...babies like the boxes and bows better than the gifts inside. But there were some pretty cool gifts inside. For example...

A face block...so she can see all of her family even if she doesn't get to see them all the time.

And some puffy letters. Tasty and cute. Actually they aren't that tasty.

And a farm, complete with a horse, pig, sheep and farmer lady.

Lily also got a musical table which is awesome because it keeps her attention for like two minutes (which I think is like three hours in baby time). And she started baby dancing to the tunes. I'm pretty sure it's the cutest thing ever.

We hope you had a completely great, totally fantastically amazingly awesome Christmas.

The Christmas Story

Throughout my life I've heard the Christmas story hundreds of times.  Literally.  I can quote it almost flawlessly...depending on which version of the Bible you are using.  I've played every character...well, almost every character.  I never made a good Joseph.  I've been Mary and Gabriel the Angel and a member of the host of Angels.  Guys, I know the story.  But this year, when I read the story, I feel different.

Mary, an unwed, pregnant girl, has to travel 90 miles on a donkey and ends up having her baby in a barn.  I had a baby in a hospital with some pretty awesome meds.  I can't imagine someone telling me that my only option is to have my baby right next to a pile of cow poop.  I have to think Mary pictured the delivery different too.  And then people travel from all over talking about angels and pretty stars and they tell her that this baby is going to save the world.  Cool...but does anyone have a fresh diaper or a burp cloth because this baby Savior just spit up all over the only fresh pile of hay in this place.

It must have been hard to be Mary.  People gossiping behind your back about an unexpected pregnancy and rolling their eyes when you promise the baby is from God.  Uh huh.  Heard that one before.  You are the mom to this special baby...one people talk about...one people have talked about for centuries.  And year after year you watch your baby grow until one day it happens.  The thing you heard prophecies about.  The thing you wondered about in the dark, quiet corners of your heart.  The crowds hate your baby.  They spit and they hurl insults and rocks.  That thing they say about sticks and stones breaking bones but words not hurting?  Not true.  Every word shakes you to your core.  Liar, blasphemer, one who deserves to die.  NO!  Not those words!  Not your baby!  Not the baby from the barn!  But your baby tells you it has to be like this.  So you watch as your baby is hurt and your heart weeps as your baby dies.  For others.

How hard would that be?  How could she stand it?  Mary.  When I think of her and when I try to imagine what emotions her days must have been filled with, I realize I can't even begin to understand.

This time of year, we always talk about the baby and sometimes we get lost in that part of the story.  The wise men, some shepherds, Angels singing songs we hear on the radio all season long.  But that baby, even as a baby was preparing to do something magnificent.  He decided we were so cool that he was going to take our punishment.  At church I tell the kids it would be like if you broke their mom's favorite ornament...you know the special one that means everything to her.  You were playing football inside by the tree and you bumped it.  You watch as it shatters all over the floor.  You know you are going to be in so much trouble.  But then your brother or your sister or your friend says they did it.  They get grounded. They accept your punishment.  That's what Jesus did.  He came to earth fully intending to be punished for us.  For you and me.  And Mary, his mom, she had to watch.

Guys, Christmas is a great time of year and I know this is so overstated but it's really easy to forget why we celebrate.  So between the turkey and ham and your third helping of mashed potatoes, think just for a moment about Mary and Joseph and Jesus and what happened...not just in the barn but on the tree.

Family Pictures...Part 2

Did you see those family pictures?  So cute, right?  Everyone says social media is fake...and they are totally right. Of course people are going to post their best pictures featuring their best angles in their best clothes! But this isn't Facebook so I'm gonna do what I want. Let me show you what the other 200 family pictures looked like (not literally all 200)...

It's called edited selection.

"First you want me to look over there.  And now you want me to smile too?  Nope.  I think I will do neither."

I know you can't tell from her face but seriously, I promise I didn't smell bad.

You are getting sleepy. Very, very sleepy. Like, seriously, so sleepy.

And this is where the major meltdown took place. An entire park of people staring us and our screaming child? I can check that off my bucket list.

"Are we done yet?  Cause I'm ready to peace out."

Family Pictures

I'll be honest...I've been putting off family pictures.  I love the way they look, with everyone all dressed up in their best coordinating but not quite matching outfits.  But in my mind, I've always pictured it going very differently, with tears and barf and probably rain.  So, as a result, Squeaker is 10 months old and our picture frames are still empty.  Until now.

Are you ready for this cuteness?  Because I'm putting all the pictures on here.  Don't worry...there's only 20.

See...I'm not the only one who likes to put babies in cute things!

Look closely at that face.  It made an appearance in all the other 9,000 pictures the photographer took.  She called it the "stink face."  You know what day Lily learned to make that face?  The day we took these pictures.  You know how many days she has made it after these pictures were taken?  Zero.

Ten Months

Guys...today is kind of a big day.

This little bear is 10 months old!! That's two full hands! The celebration involved me dressing her up in the cutest outfit ever and sticking her in a box. Isn't that how most people celebrate?

Lily also got her first taste of Christmas. Turns out glitter doesn't taste as good as it looks. But she will gladly lick all the ornaments just to make sure. And, bonus, I don't have to clean them because she is doing it for me! Just kidding...I was never going to clean the ornaments.

Christmas has always been fun but it's completely awesome with this little chica!! Happy 10 months!!!!
